NEW TYPES OF ACRYLIC UV- AND PEROXIDE-CURABLE ADHESIVES, COATINGS AND CASTABLE RESINS
POLYMERight, Inc. has developed specialty acrylic resins with the following properties:
- excellent flexibility and elongation (80 - 100% elongation and 2,000 - 3,000 tensile modulus in comparison with elongation of 2.5 - 4% and tensile modulus of 240,000 - 330,000 psi for conventional acrylics),
- increased chemical stability in polar solvents (swelling in acetone three times less than conventional acrylics),
- significantly shorter curing time under the influence of UV and sun light (6-10 times less for conventional acrylics),
- high adhesion to such traditionally difficult to bond substrates as glass, silicon, gold and both anodized and unanodized aluminum (500 - 1,700 psi for aluminum and silicon in comparison with 150 - 300 for conventional acrylic adhesives),
- improved abrasion resistance,
- eliminated tackiness of the open-to-air cured surfaces.
The developed by POLYMERight resins can be used separately or as additives to the commercial acrylic resins. It allows to produce a very wide variety of materials with the properties specifically designed to fit actual applications. The possible applications for the POLYMERight's acrylics include such widely diversified areas as:
- UV-curable adhesives and encapsulants for electronics industry,
- solvent-free acrylic paints and varnishes for wood (for example, fences, furniture and parquet flooring) and concrete surfaces (such as buildings, retaining and sound walls, etc.) which are able to cure quickly and completely by sun light,
- abrasive resistant seamless floors cured without dangerous and explosion-prone organic peroxides,
- automotive paints, coatings and top coats with superior weatherability and chemical and abrasion resistance that use much less energy for curing,
- additives to commercial acrylic resins that are used for casting sheets, rods and other details with improved toughness and flexibility.
Production of the POLYMERight's acrylic resins does not involve complex machinery and could be organized using conventional industrial mixers. The cost of produced resins is comparable with inferior acrylic modifiers available on the market.
